The perfect posture is one in which there is least amount of strain on the joints, muscles and ligaments that support your body when you are sitting, standing, moving around or lying down.
Given below are a few tips to achieve the perfect posture:
Sitting: We are sitting for the most part of the day. How we sit, has a great impact on our health, so we should begin by sitting right.
The first thing you need to do is to uncross your legs and plant them on the floor. Sit at a height such that your hips are slightly higher than your knees. Keep your back straight and tummy firm. Keep your head and neck in line with your spine and shoulders relaxed. If you are working with computer or a laptop, make sure the devices are placed at a height where you won’t have to slouch.
Standing: A healthy spine should have 3 curves- an inward curve in the lower back, an outward curve at the shoulder blades, and another inner curve at the neck.
The key to maintaining a good posture while standing is to distribute the body weight evenly. Most of the times, we put all our body weight on the heels. This is incorrect. The body weight has to be distributed equally through our feet.
To understand this, get up and stand on your bare feet. Feel the process of distributing your weight evenly. While doing so you will feel that your shoulders straighten and abdomen gets pulled inward automatically. Look up and pull you navel towards your spine. This is the perfect standing posture.
You can practice the perfect posture at all times. A good posture makes you aware of your body and strengthens your back and other muscles. It helps keep back and neck diseases at bay. In fact, research studies state the people with backache reported a great relief of their symptoms just by improving their posture. Perfect posture also opens up your airways and you end up getting more oxygen and utilizing it effectively.
Besides the health benefits, maintaining a good posture makes you look taller and more confident of yourself and you create the perfect first impression!
What you feel in your head is what is reflected in your body. If you are depressed or bored, you slouch. If you are happy and confident, it shows in your gait. Maintaining a good posture helps in improving your self-confidence.
