Common causes behind the bloated belly with tips to beat the bloating

Your Jeans are straining at waist! You are not expecting and you have not put on weight either, so what could be wrong? Here are the most common causes behind the bloated belly.

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

Bloating on and off for a long along with pain, constipation and/or bouts of diarrhoea can be irritable bowel. This is a disorder in which there is nothing wrong with the structure of the bowel itself, but the way the gut works is abnormal. Bloating is one of the side effects of IBS. Some women have dress sizes increased by number of inches and even need different clothes depending on whether they are bloated or not. There is no cure for IBS, but symptoms are manageable. Cut down on cereal fiber. This will relieve 50% symptoms in most of the people. Avoid foods like bread, oats, muesli, digestive biscuits, cereal bars and all breakfast cereals. Doing this for three months might help. Probiotics help to ease symptoms sometimes. Take these along with prescribed medicines like antispasmodics, laxatives and antidiarrhoeals.

  • Flatulence

Passing lot of wind especially after eating can be the sign that you have gaseous distension. 15 times a day is said to be normal. It can be awkward or feels uncomfortable. Try cutting down on foods high in non-absorbable carbs. Beans, pulses, broccoli, cabbage, and apples, and foods containing sugar substitute sorbitol are some of the common culprits. These take a long time to digest and release small amounts of sulphur gas as they pass through the digestive tract. Eat slowly and chew properly. Unchewed and improperly chewed food gets fermented and leads to lot of gases and distension. Sometimes underlying health conditions can be the cause of flatulence.

  • Coeliac Disease

If you often feel tired; you have lost weight for no apparent reason; you are suffering from abdominal pain then celiac disease could be the cause of bloating. This occurs in reaction to gluten found in wheat, barley, and rye. This is an autoimmune condition where the body mistakes substances in gluten as a threat and attacks them leading to damage to the surface of the small intestine, which affects the ability to absorb nutrients. It is mainly a problem in kids and can go unnoticed in the middle aged. See a doctor to get a test done and start avoiding all foods containing gluten if test is positive.

  • Hormonal fluctuations

Changes in hormonal balance of body before menses, before menopause and after menopause, and even during pregnancy can affect the intestinal movements and cause bloating and constipation. Beat the bloat by exercising. Workout helps to improve digestion and intestinal function. Add fruits, vegetables, and grains to diet to avoid constipation.

  • Ovarian Cancer

Persistent bloating with abdominal pain and fullness for a long time might be the cause. The symptoms of cancer are indistinct and vague and diagnosed late. Be aware of the potential signs to get early treatment. Prime symptoms include persistent bloating with increased abdominal size, constant and frequent abdominal pain, indigestion for a long time and urinary symptoms. It is not likely that symptoms are caused by a serious health condition, but it's important to get evaluated and rule out.

  • Chewing gums

Using chewing gum often leads to swallowing lot of air and it could be the prime reason for bloating. Avoid chewing gums and even better, switch to healthy snacks.
