Obesity is a major health problem, and has been found to be greatly linked to depression. The onset has been observed to follow gender differences for the incident.

The relationship between obesity and depressive symptoms vary for both genders. In women, the relationships between BMI (Body Mass Index) and depressive symptoms were found to fluctuate in tandem however for men they remained constant. While women showed a relationship between percent fat and depressive symptoms, in men they were found to have completely disappeared.

The studies suggest that depressive symptoms in women may be more influenced by body size than actual amount of body fat and that men's depressive symptoms are relatively unrelated to any of the diverse measures of obesity.

People can be put to stress, especially as they are expected to manage both work and personal front. Family problems, professional and hormonal changes can come to the point of being strenous mentally. This distress, called stress in simple terms has massive consequences, emotionally and health-wise.

Stress & weight gain are two interrelated conditions. The common consequence of stress is weight gain. So there is no surprise why a large number of women suffer from a weight problem.

Coping with this downward spiral of the havoc of stress and obesity and depression can prove to be quite tough. A person becomes depressed because he is obese; he begins to manifest low self-esteem. Because of low self-esteem, he loses confidence in himself and his will-power weakens. With a diminished will-power, weight loss then becomes a struggle.

This is the vicious cycle of obesity and depression in any person either be man or women. Middle-aged women are especially prone to become obese. Studies have shown that obese people are twice as much more likely to suffer from depression.

Ways to overcome this:

  • Self-esteem should basically be boosted, making them believe in themselves.

  • Council, Train & Educate for losing weight.

  • With a rebuilt belief in oneself, person would then have the initiative to pursue weight loss effort.


It is crucial to breaking free the general populace from this dilemma of obesity and depression. You may be caught up in this vicious cycle. You ought to be informed of why it is essential for you to step out of this spiral. Obesity and depression not only cause you emotional unhappiness your mental health can suffer too. Overweight and obesity discrimination is prevalent in the current social structure. But more than the social or mental and emotional consequences, obesity and depression threaten your physical health. Due to obesity and depression, a person can develop cardiovascular diseases or even infertility, for that matter,  results due to poor weight management. Gout, gall bladder disease, ovarian cancer and other types of cancer can arise as well, or then there are sleeping problems such as sleep apnoea which are a consequence of obesity.

Obesity and depression can result to an overall negative impact on one's life. Being overweight causes mobility problems. But more than physical immobility, their social life can be disturbed as well. If you too have fallen to the trap of obesity and depression, begin the battle with the thought that you are in control. That the outcome of your health depends on you and you can do something about beating obesity and depression and paving the way towards happiness.
