Summer woes – Skin troubles and remedies

Summers are a harsh time for your skin. The blazing sun, combined with the dry air of the air conditioner, can be a torture for the skin! Here are a few simple tips to keep summer skin problems at bay:

  • Drink loads of water. This may seem like a no brainer, as the hot weather tends to make one thirsty and one would anyway drink loads of water. But there is a reason why this finds a spot in the list. You see, your skin requires moisture. A well-hydrated skin is the one that is free of all troubles. This hydration comes only from water and natural drinks. So cut out the sodas and colas and have some plain water, coconut water or refreshing buttermilk instead.

  • Sunburns are the banes of summer time. Never step out of your house without applying ample sunscreen. Choose sunscreens with zinc in them, as this mineral can work wonders for your skin. Wear loose fitting, full-sleeved cotton clothes and wide-brimmed hats for added protection.

  • Contact dermatitis is a common condition in summers. Even in summers, you may suffer from allergic reactions caused by plants like poison ivy or by insects and bugs. Symptoms include sting pain, itchy skin and the appearance of blisters. Hence, it is highly recommended to keep your body fully covered while working in susceptible areas. See your dermatologist if the symptoms are severe or if they do not subside after first-aid.

  • Summers make you sweat a lot. When this sweat collects in the skin folds like the hips, groin, armpits, or in between the toes and fingers, it causes the growth of fungus. This can lead to severe itching and redness that may often spread to other areas of the body as well. Take special care while drying yourself after bathing every day. Ensure that the areas where the skin folds are well dried. Use an antiseptic or a deodorizing powder liberally that will absorb any remaining moisture.

  • Summer heat makes your skin dry. Due to this the skin secretes more oil in order to keep itself moist. Oily skin may lead to acne and pimples. So it is recommended to keep your face clean and oil-free by washing it with a mild cleanser and patting it dry.

  • Thinking of taking a dip in the cool waters of the swimming pool? Apply some cream all over your body before you dive in. The chlorine, which is added in the swimming pool water, may give you allergic rashes and skin burns!
