Ever feel like you’re really boated after a meal which wasn’t too heavy or experience symptoms of heartburn repetitively? Well, you’re not alone! Most dismiss this feeling as gas or something else when in fact it may just be an ulcer. Generally associated with a burning sensation in the digestive tract or bloating, a peptic ulcer is an open sore in the stomach lining or small intestine which can sometimes cause belly pain. What can cause a peptic ulcer? An ulcer is usually caused due to a bacterial infection in the stomach. Other factors also include smoking, excessive alcohol and increased painkillers. A lot of us tend to pop a painkiller for any discomfort even without the doctor’s diagnosis. Overtime, these painkillers tend to affect the stomach lining leading to a greater risk for an ulcer. How do I know if I have an ulcer? There are some common symptoms experienced by people with peptic ulcers. These include nausea, heartburn or a burning sensation in the digestive tract, pain in the belly region and vomiting. In some cases if an ulcer is not treated in time and is severe, the symptoms may also include weight loss along with bleeding in stool and vomit. How is an ulcer treated? An ulcer is typically caused by an imbalance in the digestive fluids and increased acid production. The most common treatment is through an acid blocking medicine also known as proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and antibiotics. In cases where the ulcer doesn’t react to the medication, the doctor may advise surgery. Who is at risk? There are certain factors that may increase the risk of a peptic ulcer for some people. A common factor is age, with people over 50 years of age being more susceptible to ulcers. Individuals that smoke, drink alcohol and caffeine excessively, or are on certain medication like painkillers and other NSAIDs are also more susceptible to ulcers. How can I prevent an ulcer? A healthy lifestyle is your best bet at preventing an ulcer. Don’t overdo alcohol or cigarettes as they are terrible for your stomach lining. When taking any medication, be sure it always under a doctor’s supervision as some medicines may damage tissue in the lining. Also, avoid heavy and spicy meals that may increase acid production in the stomach. What foods are best to avoid ulcers? Avoid spicy food or one with high levels of fat. Opt for fresh fruits and vegetables along with wholegrain food items. These digest slowly in the body and thus metabolise at an even rate without excess acid production. Feel free to discuss your diet with the doctor to know any specific foods to avoid based on your diagnosis. 0 thoughts on “ Facts about peptic ulcer” Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published.
